The idea of being there when she studying is just nice and he really should have done more on the commission than he has already.

So he decided to grab a mixture of things and asked Bar for something to eat and she provided him with a simple basket with snacks in it.

Once he was sure he hadn't forgotten anything, then he knocked.

"Yellow striped stockings and feathers."

He waves the pastry at her to make his point.

"Yellow feathers?"

"Gold feathers and it was heavy and they're supposed to try and trip me up."

"On stilts."

"Stilts hurt and I kind of tripped one of them up so they were out to get me. I had horrible bruises."

The combination of his words, the mental image, and the way he is shaking the pastry at her make Kait tip her head back and laugh.

When she starts laughing, he glares at her and eats the pastry.

Then he finally gives up and flicks some crumbs at her,

"They were impressive bruises."

"But they are all gone now."

"Yes."

Her logic is very unhelpful so he grabs another pastry from the basket,

"How's the reading going?"

Kait's fallen from a third story window with no injuries lasting more than a day; physical ailments do not really exist in her world view. She is also a history student, and thus easily distracted by scholarly woes.

"Frustrating. There is so much behind the lines, and that's not mentioning the contradictions." She glares at her book. "I half wish at least one of these people was still alive so I could ask what was actually going on."

"Well, its politics and things get odd when you have gaps too. What's not making sense?"

He's tall enough that he can lean over to peer at the book.

Kait tells him exactly what is not making sense, in enough detail that if she were writing it, half the things she says would be in footnotes. It starts with a merchant banker with a toy monkey, and ends in the Five Families only narrowly agreeing that a civil war would be bad for business.

At the end, Kait stops and takes a long drink.

By the end of the explanation, he's just looking at her with a lot of respect,

"Are civil wars avoided a lot?"

"Yes and no. You'd be astounded at what can be classed as a civil war."

"I probably would since the Old Kingdom doesn't really have any in our history."

[redefinevictory]

"How long is your history?"

[makesthings]

"Five hundred or so two hundred years ago a lot of damage was done but it wasn't really a civil war. Also a lot of things are missing since then, my father spent those years as a figurehead on a ship."

"I do beg your pardon?"

[makesthings]

"Which part?"

His family's history is rather odd, but then Kerrigor was very powerful.

"The part where your father was the figurehead of a ship?"

[makesthings]

"I'm still not quite sure how it happened but mother found him and restored him. When it happened to him was when a lot of things that protected the Old Kingdom were broken."

"That normally happens. I mean, the, uh, losing of protection and stability with the loss of...leaders..." Sorry, Sam, your girlfriend is still stuck on the fact that your father was literally part of a ship.

"The Great Charter Stones were also broken, we're still fixing them."

[redefinevictory]

"Oh. No, that wouldn't help, either." She looks sympathetic.

[makesthings]

"They can be fixed though. Its just that Father doesn't remember a lot of things. If you want I could tell you what happened, its just not a terribly nice part of our history."
