The idea of being there when she studying is just nice and he really should have done more on the commission than he has already.

So he decided to grab a mixture of things and asked Bar for something to eat and she provided him with a simple basket with snacks in it.

Once he was sure he hadn't forgotten anything, then he knocked.

"Seems a shame. You make such interesting things."

"Yes, but its not what I'm really supposed to be doing. Its what I do when I've done everything else."

He starts searching in the basket again, because he hates thinking about this.

Part of Kait wants to poke and prod and see...but the other is aware of how uncomfortable he seems, so she leaves it.

"And you are making it out of metal? The dragon?"

"Yes though without any sharp edges."

He's grateful, he would probably tell her but he won't volunteer anything easily.

"Hollow to keep it light?"

[makesthings]

"Well, it needs to be hollow so it can have something to power it."

"I didn't think of that."

[makesthings]

He just smirks and leans over to kiss her,

"Most people don't, after all you don't see it. All the really interesting stuff happens where you can't."

Kait smirks back.

"Spoken like a true engineer."

[makesthings]

"Maybe, engineers have more training and make things that are more than toys."

[redefinevictory]

"You are how old again?"

[makesthings]

"Turning seventeen in two weeks. Why?"

"So you're an apprentice engineer," she says, serenely taking a bite of pastry.

[makesthings]

He frowns and then smiles with a sigh and eats the pie he's grabbed,

"Who am I apprenticed to?"

"...I hadn't worked out that bit."

[makesthings]

"Good thought but if I'm apprenticed to anyone its my mother since I'm Abhorsen in Waiting."

The smile disappears as he eats and doesn't really return,

"Be nice if it were true."

"Why don't you want to be Abhorsen?" She'd tried to hold back, but it keeps coming up, and she can't avoid it until she knows the problem.

He wants to tell her but its hard and he feels like such a failure so he goes quiet before saying,

"I like making things more, but I don't have a choice. I'm the only one who can be the next Abhorsen."

Its most of the truth just missing a rather important part, but he doesn't want her to know how scared he gets with just the idea of opening The Book of the Dead.

That is not particularly an answer, Kait feels.

"I'm sorry," she says, but doesn't mean it as much as another girl would. Duty and obedience to it are concepts that she has been raised to, and as she the fortune of enjoying the study for this duty, it is hard to understand someone who might not.

He wasn't expecting anything else and stands up to walk over to the window and look out,

"Doesn't really matter anyway if I like it or not. I'll do it and do the best I can."

"Of course you will." That, at least, she believes. Sighing faintly, she picks up her glass, takes a drink, and then walks over to him. "Sam," she says, then stands up on her tip-toes to kiss him.

The kiss is a nice surprise and he leans down to return the kiss,

"Sorry."

"Mmm, about what?"

[makesthings]

"Going on like that."

Since he really would rather kiss her, he does, this time, lifting her slightly so neither of them has to lean.

"I asked," Kait says, slightly breathless.
