Talking with Nick after Ava

Someday Sam will remember to stop working when the sun comes up, but last night wasn't one of those nights.

He opened the door from his workroom and found Milliways and just went up to that room, where he remembered to take off his boots and set the wards before falling asleep.

His dreams were nice, being in the room made him think of Kait and he kept reaching out for her in his sleep.

"That's something and hopefully the time there won't be too boring,"

It's been rare that he ever liked too many of the men he met who were connected to Nick's uncle.

He rolls his eyes.

"I'm sure it will, but there's no help for it."

Even if Uncle Edward is being cagey about it all for some reason.

"At least you'll be closer to the Wall and you'll find something to keep yourself occupied,"

Nick always does, he's reliable that way.

He might as well have heard Sam's thought. Nick grins.

"Always do."

[makesthings]

"I know, just don't do anything that requires too much diplomacy."

[wordofa_sayre]

"Sayre or not, I've no intention of taking up my family's career plans for me," Nick informs him. "Even if they have sent me off to Uncle to get 'properly situated.'"

And to be near various doctors for follow-ups, he knows, but there's no point in dwelling on that.

"Let me know if you need help getting to the Old Kingdom sooner. When Ellimere or Dad take control things happen,"

He knows that Nick needs to be in the Old Kingdom, but getting him there is taking far too long.

"I'll handle it, Sam."

He doesn't intend the faint stubbornness that edges his words, but it's there all the same.

"I've said I would, and I will. Word of a Sayre, you know."

It's hard to miss and Sam runs a hand through his hair,

"I know, sorry, you know I worry."

"I know."

Nick's smile flashes once more.

"Wouldn't be you if you didn't, right?"

"No, I wouldn't. Do you have any research to keep busy while you're at Dorrance's?"

[wordofa_sayre]

"Not a bloody thing. It's some sort of a house party, I gather."

[makesthings]

"Those are horrible. You have to be social and can't just leave. At least with State Dinners, they stop at a certain point."

[wordofa_sayre]

"So will this," Nick counters, and then sighs.

"It'll just take a few days."

[makesthings]

"Then you'll finally get to see the Old Kingdom, I mean as it should be seen,"

Not when they're in the midst of saving the world.

[wordofa_sayre]

He grins at that.

"I can't wait."

[makesthings]

"Yes, though you'll have to keep Ellimere from pulling you into too many jobs."

[wordofa_sayre]

"I'll talk her around."

Nick sounds supremely confident about his ability to do this.

"I have to say I'm looking forward to meeting the famous Ellimere."

Sam laughs as he knows Nick's good but he doesn't think he's that good,

"She'll be glad to finally meet you as well."

[wordofa_sayre]

"Soon. I'll leave a message for you here as soon as I start for the Wall, shall I? How much time will you need to arrange whatever you need to on your end?"

This time, Nick's not going to make the same foolish mistake that he did with Hedge.

"Not too long this time just a few weeks to allow me to get to the Wall."

"I'll be sure to do that."

He lounges in the chair with teacup in hand and gives Sam a curious look.

"What were you working on this time, anyway?"

"A couple of things, I've got some ideas about how to better mend the Charter Stones and I'm working on some ways to improve scale mail as well as some of my mechanical projects."

"Keeping busy, I see."

[makesthings]

"It's what I'm good at,"

As well as keeping him from thinking too much about Kait, which its best not to think on.
