Since he's found a door to Milliways again, Sam's days have been full of the forge and Kait.

At the moment, his major project is the soldier for Tavi, which is going slowly due to the joints and detail work.

So to put his thoughts in order, he works on the simpler things that need to get done, arrow heads and horseshoes.

The forge is hot and the glow of the Charter adds another layer to the fire.

Sam can't help smiling, Kait makes him feel as if he can do so much,

"Yes, her name's Kait and she's from another world where she's a lady. I want you to meet her at some point, but only if you behave."

"Well, her being a lady'll help with managing Ellimere," Nick observes, dryly-- right before he stops grinning and instead gives Sameth a quick, very innocent smile.

"Why, Sam, old chap, I'm hurt. You know I'll be on my best behavior for something like this."

(And if Sam believes that... Nick's got a bridge to sell him.)

"We're not a this, well maybe we are. I don't know, it just happened kind of quickly but feels right. I'll deal with Ellimere when the time comes,"

Sam turns a really, lovely shade of red as he thinks about how oddly things did start with Kait.

Nick's grin returns at the sight of Sam's red face, and he delivers a friendly clout to his shoulder.

"Better wait until I get there to help."

"Ellimere doesn't even know about Milliways. I'd have to explain that first and then Kait,"

The list of all the things that he's not talking about with Ellimere just keeps getting longer.

"Sam." He rolls his eyes. "Bring your lady friend on through, pretend she's the daughter of someone Ellimere's never heard of, and then-- wait."

A beat.

"Can you bring someone else through from here to there? I haven't tested that yet--"

Nick looks to be right on the verge of leaping up to do so.

"I think you can, but I haven't tried it yet. That might work just not right now,"

Things are too complicated.

"Why not?"

"Because Mother and Dad just left on a diplomatic mission so they're not around. I'd rather introduce her to everyone at once and things are just busy at the moment,"

He's not going to put Kait into danger especially a danger that he's not sure he can protect her from.

"Ah." Nick nods. "Makes sense."

He jumps to his feet.

"I'm for inside and something cool to drink -- coming?"

Sam laughs and stands up, he's missed how quickly Nick decides things,

"And some chips, they make great chips here."

[wordofa_sayre]

"Excellent," Nick declares, and slings an arm over Sam's shoulders.

"And while we're at it, you can tell me all about the wondrous Kait."
